Question
I have a 13 year old gelding whos first owner (bout 5 years ago) Didn't discourage biting while he is groomed. I've been poking him in the cheek every time he tries to bite but he's not getting it. Also recently he began chewing his rope he's tied up with, and he was able to untie himself recently. How can I get him to stop these bad habits?

Answer
Hello,
It really comes down to timing to teach a horse to be still when you are grooming him. I would make sure you are using a natural rope halter with a heavier natural lead. Then work on grooming him without tying him up. You can even work on this in the arena. Stand at his side and keep the lead in one hand and start to rub him with your other hand. If he moves or tries anything with his mouth give him a big bump with your rope. He may back up or turn, your job is to stay standing at his side- stay glued to that position and don't let him get you out of position. Once he lets you stand at his side and is still again give him a pet and repeat. You want to give him a choice if he stands still you'll just rub him, if he moves he gets a bump and the only thing that will get you to stand still is if he stands still and lets you stand at his side.
Let me know if you run into any issues.
