Horse that charges during round pen session

Question
I have a 5yr. old mare that has one vice that I have had no success breaking and that is she will charge at me periodically in the round pen.  It only happens when she feels I am too close to her as she is moving freely around in the pen.  I immediately correct her and send her off, but I'm concerned that she continues to do this every now and then.  I know she is checking my leadership, but have you ever had this problem when training?

Answer
Hi Mary,
In answer to the last part of your question, yes. I have had a few horses challenge me in the round pen. That is what it is. A challenge. A lack of respect. They are saying, "Hey!...I'm the boss here and your not going to tell me where to move my feet!" What I have done successfully in the past is put them to work. By this I mean moving their feet.....forward, back, left and right. If you control the horses feet, you control their minds. I don't just "move them off". I make them change directions. I make them hustle. Make her fast trot off in one direction in the pen for a circle and then make her change directions and go the other way. Move towards her with your chest out, standing very upright, wiggling the lead rope. Make her back up with energy. Just make her move in different directions with energy. Make her sweat. We aren't trying to tire the horse out. Just letting them know we control the feet and you are the herd leader. If your not the leader then she will gladly accept the role. And it won't be pretty. Make sure you don't work her until she's completely out of air. If she starts to look winded....let her stand and tank up on air. We aren't out to abuse her. Just get her respect. Hope this helps. Try it. If you still have problems contact me again and we will work on it some more. Please stay safe.
