Question
Hey my name is amanda and im am 13 years old. this summer i will be babysitting a 12 year old i know that's kinda weird she is only a year younger than me but oh well. well they live near a barn so therefore there are horses. i have very little experience around horses and i must be expected to know safety tips and such about them to protect the girl.  she knows how to saddle them up and stuff so i dont have to worry about that, but i do need to know some tips for safety and i was wondering if u could help me out. thanks so much! GOD BLESS!!!!

Answer
Amanda,    In my opinion, you should always have an adult around when dealing with a horse. I dont think it is safe to be babysitting a horse and a person, as both are quite time consuming. If you can, try to get another person over 18 to stay with you or if you can, cancel the job. No offense meant by those statements...However, here are some basics on horse safety. When handling a horse on the ground, always stay aware that he can kick or bite. When you are walking behind the horse, either walk as close to his rump as you can, or stay atleast 16 feet behind him. Always stay away if the horse is pinning his ears like bullets flat back on his head or striking the ground with his hoofs, besides being on the lookout for flies. This means that he is angry. Never lead the horse just by his halter, always tie a leadrope on him so your hand doesnt get caught in the halter. when letting the horse out in the pasture stay clear from him as he is leaving the barn, usually, he will run fast. As for riding, always wear a helmet and gloves, and if you are jumping, a chest/body protector. Only do what you are comfortable with. Please, if you can, take the first advice I gave you, as I feel uncomfortable telling you you should take care of a horse and child yourself. Just be safe and if there are anymore questoins throuout the babysitting or something I havent covered, Post another question. Thank you, Kim
