suggested reading?

Question
Could you suggest some books that deal with the body language and emotions of horses and/or the behavior and psychology of horses etc?  Something that explains how a horse tries to communicate, why it's trying to communicate, and if what it's doing is undesired, how to go about correcting it. Preferably something that's still in print and that I can get at my local Barnes and Noble.

Answer
Hi Kara;

You might like to read True Unity by Tom Dorrance and Bill Dorrance has a book as well that might be helpful, although the title escapes me right now.  Tom was the natural horseman while Bill learnt to be very good by watching Tom.  They have a different style of telling so one might make more sense to you than the other.

Also, consider something by Mark Rashid.

The Tao of Equus by Linda Kohanov is an excellant book that explores the spirit of the horse through healing.  It's a very enlightening book that has lots to say about language, emotions, behaviour and psychology of the horse through observation, rather than by making scientific statements.

Dancing With Horses by Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling is also a beautiful book.

Happy Reading!

Sincerely,

Lana Reinhardt
