4 year old pacer wont go

Question
I have a 4 year old pacer who raced as a 2 year old and showed great early speed, but we stopped him after he developed colt soreness.  Just before his 3 year old campaign we had him castrated which became infected and at the same time his hock also developed an infection due to an injection.  We also discovered that he had a OCD that had to be removed from the same hock.  After an operation to remove the OCD, cleaning out the infections & a good six months of rest & rehab we finally got him back into training in the middle of his 3 year old season.  He has always shown speed but the problem now is that during his training sessions he will train great for the first half mile or so but when he hits that 2nd half he will just curl in & pull himself up.  This happens when is going the right way on the track.  You train him going the opposite way no problem.  We have had him checked by a vet, his hock looks great, he eats well, doesn't go in on the line. He shows no lameness.  He comes from the NO Nukes bloodline & we have heard that maybe this is part of the problem.

Any thoughts.

Answer
Hi Gary.
Your poor boy has certainly been through a lot! It speaks volumes about you that you seem to have taken the time to do everything right! A lot of owners or trainers would have had him in the sales ring when the first sign of colt soreness reared it's ugly head :(  You've seen the sale statements..."a chancy prospect for the RIGHT buyer".....or "Just needs time that we don't have to give...."
The No Nukes breeding could be part of the problem, but with No Nukes himself he was always getting himself into trouble trying to go too much. Don't know if you ever saw him race but he made some stand still breaks---and when he came back pacing the speed was enough to take your breath away.
What I would suggest is contacting an animal psychologist. Standardbred Canada uses one on occasion so they might have some contact info, or you could try contacting the Animal Planet Network. It's a long shot, but conventional methods are getting you no where.
Best of luck, and I hope you'll let me know how you make out.

Gary,
I mispoke when I said "animal psychologist." What I should have said was "Animal Psychic." Here are a couple sites you can try:
www.animaltelepathy.com/
www.animalstalk.com/
www.telepathictalk.com/

Best of luck, and please let me know if you are able to get your boy going again.
