not to ride on road

Question
hello Lyn. why not to ride a horse on tarmac or cement road?

Answer
Rohit,

I don't know.  I have had to ride on the road or other paved surfaces many, many times.  When I compete with a horse in harness many times we have to use paved roads for a portion of the competition.  I wouldn't want to trot a barefoot horse for more than 1/4 mi. on a paved road for fear of causing issues in it's feet.  If I have had to do a lot of surfaces like that in a ride competition I have my horses either shod with high impact pads, I've used plastic shoes, or Easy Boots to help absorb the concussion of the pavement.  You also have to watch traction.  Wet pavement can be extremely slippery.
