Question
dear kelsey ray,
I am about to purchase my first horse. I am a beginner rider and have been taking lessons once a week since the end of March. I am no expert--am just starting to jump in my lessons. The horse I buy will be a loved member of my family, and I have no plans to compete with him. He will be only for pleasure. I am wondering of you have any advice for me when making my horse purchase. Obviously I need a gentle horse who is already well trained and 100% sound. What else would you underscore that I look for?

Thanks for your answer.

Answer
Hi Colleen,
At any horse you look at always get his background. You dont want to get an ex racehorse or ex rodeo horse. A good "bomb proof" horse is what you want. If its just for pleasure thats the main thing to look for. It also depends on your preferance of breed. colour etc. Make sure he loads well, stands still when saddling him, has no past history of illness, or temperment. Always do a test ride on a horse you might buy.
