Question
My mom's 10 year old mare is in good health except for the fact that she began losing weight about three or four weeks ago. She is no longer healthy looking because she now we are able to see her ribs, hips, and every other bone in her body that should not be seen. She has been wormed and has had her food increased. Currently she eats a combination of alfalfa and 12% horse pellets and has access to hay. We have three other horses and none of them are experiencing this condition. She has no other symptoms and is deteriorating slowly. If there are any thoughts on the matter and possible solutions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
hi shauna, have her teeth checked. this is the main reason why horses loose weight. they cannot chew their food properly so their body does not digest it properly. also switch her to only alfalfa and alfalfa pellets. you can also give her rice bran which is all fat, vegetable oil which is all fat and mare and foal. this will provide her with extra nutrients her body isnt getting. but definitly have her teeth done ASAP.good luck
