Question
we just bought a horse. the gentleman we got her from said he thought she was pregent, how can we tell if she is or not

Answer
Dear Karen,
Frankly, I would be very concerned about buying a horse that the seller "thought" was pregnant. It indicates that the seller either a) did not have the horse very long and didn't know very much about it or b) is, at the least, rather unknowledgeable about breeding. Horses don't exactly get in foal by accident (at least one would HOPE not). Anyone involved in a legitimate breeding program would have had the mare ultra sounded after 30 days to see if the mare took.
In any event- that is what you need to do- contact a vet and have the mare preg. checked - and this is important as is the mare's vaccination history. What you feed, how you vaccinate and how you worm will be dictated by whether the mare is in foal or not.
Sincerely,
S. Evans
