Question
How can I tell my tortoises sex?  Will my desert tortoise get along with my russian tortoise?

P.S.

Last time you anserd me about if, other types tortoises would get along? I think you are wrong because at Pet's
Mart, they had them all stacked up on each other and some were together.

Answer
Sexing a Russian tortoise- try this link: http://www.chelonia.org/sexing/sexing_testudo_horsfieldi.htm

It explains everything and has pictures.

Will a Russian 'get along' with a Russian? They may attack each other if the habitat is too small and they feel stressed, they may fight for food if they are hungry enough. They may bite at each other or batter each other when stressed or angry. True Desert Tortoises ram their opponents all the time- other Deserts are used to it, but it will drive the Russian crazy. Most of the time, they will ignore each other.

Tortoises do not usually want or need cagemates- and if you do have two tortoises at the same time, you NEED plenty of space for both. Tortoises for the most part ignore each other- they do not play or socialize and are usually happier alone most of the time.

Deserts, especially, need BIG habitats- 10'x10' is OK- if it has places it can burrow. I already told you Deserts are illegal to own, and hard to care for, right?

PetsMart is not known for caring for many pets, especially reptiles, well. Many of their tortoises are kept in habitats and with diets that will kill the tortoise after a couple months- but they usually sell them before they get too sick.

If PetsMart is offering a Desert Tortoise, they are either breaking federal law, or, more likely, have the wrong name on the sign. (They also have a bad habit of mis-naming animals.)
