My turtle is still as dead

Question
Hi Amanda, today my red eared slider turtle suddenly is motionless with his head hung out with no relfex to touch or movement. His eyes are partly open. He is not eating any thing and we have kept him in a small water bowl. I spoke to a dog vetenarian to seek advice if he can help, according to the doctor its hibernating. Is that correct please advice. We had kept him with 2-3 guppy fishes. From past few days a lot of algae has been sticking to his shell. I am quite worried. Please advice.

Answer
Hi Shruti,

I am very sorry, but I do not think your turtle is hibernating.  He is either dead or dying.  When turtles hibernate they do not have their heads hung out and they do respond to touch.

I would suggest keeping him wrapped loosely in a wet towel so that he can breath air, but his skin doesn't dry out.  Give him a quiet, dark place to pass away quietly.

You can try taking him to an exotic animal vet (a bird vet usually also treats turtles... at least here in the US) but it sounds like he is very close to death if he is not already gone.

I am so sorry to hear about your turtle.  I have lost turtles and I know how it hurts.
