Sleepy Red Ear Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)

Question
Is it normal behavior for a Red ear slider to sleep all day on the basking spot?  she doesn't sleep in the water like other RES even though the water temp is just right!  we have to remind her to eat by waking her up every so often, but tonight she wouldn't wake up, she is alive, because there is movement when we caress her carapace.  it took about 10-14 minutes for her to wake up, and now when we place her back in her water, she will just close her eyes and float in the  water motionless, then she swims and goes to her basking spot to sleep again.

Should i be concerned?

Answer
Hi Christopher, I am not sure where you are located but if it is beginning to get cold it can be a form of hibernation. Though this is unlikely it is possible. How old is she? She may be gravid (pregnant) and that would explain her excessive basking. Take her to the vet and have them do a check up and xray on her to be sure everything is OK. The baskign is normal however sleeping isn't always common, but not too much of a serious problem that I can think of. Let me know how it goes

Best of luck
