QuestionI have 3 of the red ear sliders. One is about 6 or 7 inches long that someone gave me and the other two were purchased in a pet shop and are about 3 inches long. I live in the Lake Amistad TX area where these turtles are wild. I was wondering if these turtles can be returned to the wild. Its about 50 degrees here now and the lake is not real warm, would they have any chance of survival if put in the lake.
AnswerYou can't release them, because captive turtles that are released into natural waterways can introduce pathogens and cause serious problems to native wildlife, which is why it's illegal in most areas. Try contacting a local reptile rescue or herp society for help in rehoming them, although it's difficult to find good homes for RES because there's so many in rescue already, so be patient. Good luck!
