Questionhow much does a sugar glider cost?
AnswerDear Joe:
I wish the answer was as simple as your question. The initial cost of a sugar glider depends on the age and color of the glider and how you acquire it. If you were to contact a licensed breeder, you might expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 for a normal gray joey.
Color variations such as white-faced blonde, cinnamon, leceustic, and albino can range from $300 to well over $1500. Initial cost also varies, depending on the going rate in your specific location. You will find that rescuers may charge an adoption fee, usually $25-$75. You will also find adult gliders that private parties will list for sale. You should be cautious and do your research before acquiring a sugar glider by any method.
There is much more involved in the initial cost of a sugar glider. You have to factor in a nice, roomy cage (at the very least 2' X 2' X 3') $75-$350, food (including fresh fruit and vegetables, mealworms, eggs, chicken, etc. $15-25 a month), vitamins & calcium supplements $8-40 a year, sleeping pouches $6-$12 each, bonding pouches $6-12 each, a wheel $12-$30, toys (can be bought or handmade $8-$25 and bedding $5-$8. You also need to consider veterinary fees, if needed $50-$300 for a neuter, depending on the location and the vet.
So, a conservative estimate for an initial setup for a single joey and the basics (not recommended -- they do best in pairs) would be about $380-$400 just to start. Then you will have ongoing costs of food, bedding, toys, pouches and vet bills.
This is a high-maintenance exotic animal and does not make the best pet for children.
I hope this helps you in making an informed decision, Joe. Best of luck.
Laurie
