Lens Luxation

Question
I have a two year old castrated Dwarf Lop rabbit, which i noticed his pupil is white.

He is eating and drinking (although he does seem grumpy ie. doesn't want cuddling or treats!!)

I took him to my vet who said he had a Luxation Lens and to "Keep an eye on him"  He also said that the other eye was starting to get the same thing.

As he didn't make it perfectly clear what this was i have been looking it up on the net, and although i can't find a site with this in reference to rabbits, it sounds painful and looks like it should be operated on.

Do you think i should get a second opinion?

My rabbit is fully insured so i am not bothered about the cost.

Thanks

Vix

Answer
Dear Vicky,

I would *definitely* get a second opinion, preferably from a good veterinary ophthalmologist.  There are many reasons for a rabbit's pupil to turn white, among them glaucoma, cataracts, intraocular abscess (which is often related to molar root problems):

and other things.  Please do look for another vet.  You can find a good rabbit vet here:

and get a referral to an ophthalmologist, if necessary (which I would recommend).  Do this soon, as your bunny's eyesight could be in jeopardy.  A blind rabbit can live a fine life, but if his vision can be saved, then go for it.  There is no time to waste.

Good luck,

Dana
