My rabbit wont come out of the rain!

Question
My rabbit won't come out of the rain! We let her hop and play on our outdoor balcony because she is very active. The balcony is fenced very high and we have installed a bunney wire fence around it so no chewing can happen. We have toys and all sorts of lovely things for her. We also have a large, dry wooden hut that we built for her. One day it started to rain very hard and I looked outside. I did not see her, so I figured that she was hiding from the weather in her hut. But NO, she was crouched behind a broom soaking wet from the rain! She was completely soaked and cold. We took her in, dried her off, and warmed her up. One question still remains...Why won't she come in from the rain!

Answer
Hi Linnae

I really have no idea.  She should have immediately ran inside when it started raining.  Rabbits hate to get wet.    She might have been too frightened to move once it started raining.  She may have thought that the broom was her only safe haven from the rain and thought it was a good place for cover until the rain stopped.

The rain storm probably came so fast that she didn't have time to run for cover but you did the right thing by drying her off.  If she ever does this again always make sure that she is completely dry.  You never want to leave a bunny wet because they can get chilled.  Also don't use a blow dryer on a heated setting.  The heat can over heat them especially in the summer.  I use a cold air blower made for dog grooming when my rabbits get wet and I brush out their fur a bit at a time as I go.  If you have to use a blow dryer use the lowest setting possible and only a few minutes at a time with a distance of about 12 inches.

I am so sorry that your bunny gets confused about where to hide in the rain.  Maybe if you take the broom and other hiding spots off the deck then next time it rains she will run for cover.

Good luck and if you have anymore questions please let me know.
