Question
hi there, we rescued a pet rabbit about a month ago, now, it was just running free ina neighbours garden, no one has come for it as yet!! but we dont know if it is a he or she? it was very friendly at first, but now it wont let me pick it up, and it has started grunting at me, and doesnt want to come out of its hutch!! it also has made a nest about 4 days ago, but its not sleeping on it , its sleeping on the wood of the hutch? i dont understand as i thought they had thier young not long after making their nest? can you help me?  thanks xx

Answer
If it is making a nest (especially if it is plucking fur) and grunting like that, you almost certainly have a female. That would be exceptionally rare behaviour for a male, and if a male was making a nest, it would very likely be for sleeping on. A nest for babies, however, is generally not slept on by the expectant mother.

Rabbits can make a nest a week or more before they have babies. Also, many rabbits experience false pregnancies. This is where their hormones make them think they are pregnant, but they are not. However, since you do not know for sure that she is not pregnant, expect babies. Go a full 35 days since she could have had any contact with a male, as it can sometimes take that long for a female to give birth after mating.
