Question
i have6 kits who are 3 weeks old 5 out of the 6 of them have weeping eyes and crusty round their eyes can you help with this problem  as i dont know what it is many thanks

Answer
First, make sure their environment is very clean. If they are still in the nestbox or still have access to it, clean it out and give them clean nesting material. Secondly, look to see if ANY other rabbits in your care have weeping eyes, a snotty or crusty nose, or crustiness on the paws (usually caused by rabbits with a runny nose wiping it on their paws). These can all be signs of an upper respiratory problem, which can range from simple allergies to a very contagious and deadly infection. If you see any others with these symptoms, and they are not closely related, it is probably illness versus allergies. If There here is no sign of a runny nose, sneezing, or crusty paws, it may be only an eye infection. The tear ducts, especially in some breeds (mostly round headed or short-faced breeds like holland lops, netherland dwarfs, dwarf hotots, mini lops, and french lops; it can also happen more in breeds with long hair), can sometimes be prone to infections which can cause excess tearing, which turns into crusty material around the eyes.

You can try using a warm, wet washcloth to wipe away the crustiness and discharge from around the eyes. A sterile saline solution for eyes can also help to wash out bacteria and anything that might be causing allergies. They will likely squirm and try to get away, but it can really help them. If the problem continues after a few of these treatments, I would really recommend getting them to a good rabbit vet, as it could be something that is more serious than you would be able to take care of on your own.
