Question
This is his first molt. He has an entire stripe down his back where all the fur is gone. It wasn't there last night when I groomed him.I have never seen a rabbit molt. Is it normal that you can actually see his skin and also he looks like he has large white dandruff. I am very concerned about him. I do not know what is normal? Thank you for your help.

Answer
Dear Sandy,

It sounds as if your little guy has a case of fur mites (Cheyletiella parasitivorax).  Fortunately, these can be treated safely and effectively with Revolution (selamectin) from your rabbit-savvy vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

You can read more about abnormal fur loss in rabbits here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/furloss.html

But the best thing would be to get him to a good rabbit vet ASAP for prescription.  DO NOT use Frontline, which can be deadly to rabbits.

Hope this helps.

Dana
