Male and female rabbits living together?

Question
I went out the other day and got a female and a male dwarf rabbits they are about 2 months old, is it ok for them to live in the same cage? They have been in the same cage for about 4 days and they have not be fighting yet.

Answer
Oh Staci they need to be separated.  Otherwise you are going to end up with unwanted babies, and if they are brother and sister those babies could have horrible birth defects and sicknesses their whole lives.  The 2 rabbits you have can stay together for about another 3 weeks.  Never leave them together after 12 weeks old.  Some rabbits reach sexual maturity early.  This will give you time to find another cage and all the supplies.

If you want them to live together you should go have them both spayed/neutered I think they have to be a little older to be fixed, no vet is going to fix a 2 month old rabbit.  At 2 months old they technically should have been just taken away from their mother.  You are probably going to have to wait until they are 4 months old to do this.

Where did you get them?  If you got them at a pet store or even an inexperienced breeder they might not be the sex you think.  You are going to want to check yourself.  I am sending you a web page on how to sex rabbits, you can use it as a resource or however you like.

You will notice by the pictures on this site that it is VERY difficult to tell the difference between buck on doe on young rabbits that are small.

After you get them fixed you can try re-bonding them.  Then they can live together but after being separated it will take some time.  Please follow the directions on bonding them correctly.  I believe you can find directions at www.rabbit.org but if you get to that point and need help with bonding please let me know.

Some people have had success with bonding even if its only the buck that is fixed.  However, I recommend you get the doe fixed also for a couple reasons.  For about the first year she will be so filled with raging hormones that you will be tempted to strangle her... believe me dwarfs are temperamental enough and to have raging hormones on top of that is not something you are going to want for a house rabbit.  Plus people have reported that doe's will live longer if they are fixed.  They have a higher incidence of ovarian and uterine cancer if they are not fixed.

Well whatever you decide to do is your choice, but at the very least get those bunnies separated within the next few weeks.

Sincerely,

Pam
