Rabbit Noises?

Question
Hello there.

I have a single, year-old, female, Netherland Dwarf rabbit named Silke. She's spayed and lives indoors, free to run around my bunny-proofed room all day. We get along well -- she is affectionate and comfortable around me. She has a regular, healthy diet and appears to be happy. However, she is very vocal. She makes this quiet squeaking noise, usually when she's laying down or sitting, looking relaxed. Sometimes it's loud, kind of like a honking noise.

Is she just a talkative bunny, or do you think this is some kind of health problem? I appreciate your feedback.

Answer
Hi Heather,

you have a very nice setup for your little gal.

I believe the sound she is making is honking and/or clucking, based on what you describe.  I would tend to think it is more clucking, as you say she does this when sitting or laying down.  The best way I can describe it is that it kind of sounds like she has hiccups.  That's actually what we call clucking, and it is the sound an extremely happy/comfortable bunny makes.

Honking usually occurs when they are running, generally running towards you and around your feet.  That is a sign of love/affection towards whomever they are circling.

So it sounds to me she really loves you and her forever home with you.  Congrats!  Lots of people would love to have a bunny that clucks.
