Question
QUESTION: I have a male rabbit and my cousin has a female rabbit.  One day my cousin dropped of her female rabbit for a sitting and never returned for her.  So now, I have a male and female bunny and they have not been fixed.  I think the female might be pregnant.  Today I noticed blood spots in the cage and it looks as though the female is experiencing her cycle.  Do rabbits get cycles?  Please advise me if I should rush her to the vet I don't know what's happening!  Thank You
ANSWER: Camille, no rabbits do not have cycles like we do - if she is pregnant she might be about to have or already had her kits ( babies ).  Did she have a nest ?  Check the tray, if you find traces of blood in the try she might have had her babies and since there was no nest they would have died and she would have eaten them ( instinct to not have bloody stuff in the cage so predators will not come ).  If this is what happened then she will be fertile again and if put with the buck will get pregnant again.  The nest needs to be put in at day 28 and the buck removed from the area.

QUESTION: Well the bunny had her kits this morning 5 of them.  They all look healthy 1 smaller 1 is a little weak though.  Can I keep the mom with the kits or do they need to be separated?
ANSWER: Wonderful Camille - now you are a grandmother !!

Leave the doe with the kits in their nest in a separate cage - she will take care of them for the next 40 days.
You can give her 1/4 cup of rolled oats ( the kind you cook for breakfast ( not instant ) in the evenings - this will help her make more milk and they love it !

QUESTION: Thank You! Last Question I promise!  Chocolate (the doe) isn't paying much attention to the kits.  I touched them with my bare hand earlier will that affect anything?
ANSWER: Chocolate, will not mind, she is used to your smell.  ( I have a doe named Chocolate also !  - I have a whole line of does called by candy names )  Normally does only feed and check their kits once or twice a day - do not worry if she seems standoffish - when the kits come out of the nest  you will see her being more affectionate.

QUESTION: I'm sorry you have just been so helpful and knowledgable about care for my rabbits more and more questions continue to blossom. You said Chocolate's lack of interest in her kits is normal but when she does check on them does she supposed to feed them?  I do not think they have eaten since they arrived.  And what should the nest consist of?  Chocolate jumped out of a 3' cage this morning, bit a whole in my leather couch and dug out the stuffing to make a nest between the fridge and the stove in the kitchen.  Of course I couldn't leave them there so i made a pallatte out of a soft sweater in the cage.

Answer
The nest has to be a container of sorts - to keep the kits together and warm - you can use a heavy cardboard box in a pinch with soft dry hay in it ( line it with newspaper and then the hay so you can clean it every 5 days or so. ) - it should be big enough for the doe to sit in but not to lay in.  You also need to tie it to the cage so it wont fall over when she gets in and out.  three sides should be high and one side ( the door so to speak ) should be at least 10 inches high - this is so the kits who are holding on to a teat will get scraped off into the nest when mom gets out.

You can see if she is feeding them if they look hydrated - if they look like prunes then there is trouble.  Chocolate needs to be contained in the cage with the kits.
