Question
Hi my name is corinne and about 3 months ago i got a little bunny. We started litter training her and shes been using the box for about 2 months now. The only problem is that she never goes on the floor but, she loves to pee on the bed or sometimes on our laps. She is an amazing pet and is so well behaved except for this little problem. We don't let her on the bed but sometimes if we aren't watching she will jump up and do her business. Cant you please tell me why she is doing this and maybe something we can do to break this habit. By the way she is not spayed yet which we pan to get done sometime soon if that matters. Thank you for your time i hope to hear from you soon.

Answer
Hi Corinne

They do that.  Who knows why.  I have found that when my rabbits pee on my bed it is because they are mad at me.  She could be marking you as her territory and even your bed as her territory.  Once you get her spayed she should stop this.  If she is going to continue spraying you may have to only let her out during supervised sessions or put up a big play pen in only one area for her to be free all the time.  If you catch her trying to pee on the bed or on you promptly pick her up and put her back in her cage.  You can give her a 10 minute time out but you have to catch her in the act or she wont know why she is getting the time out.

In the area's she has pee'd before try spraying them with vinegar and water so that she can't smell it.  Then she most likely won't go in that area anymore.  I am pretty sure that you probably don't want to put vinegar on your lap but you can spray it on your bed to take the odor away.

I am still working with one of my babies who consistently pee's on my whenever I pick her up.  I am sure she is just marking me because like yours other than that she is such a good rabbit.  I guess you can feel special knowing that she loves you enough to mark you as your own.

Hopefully she will get better after her spay.  Remember that after the surgery she will probably need to be retrained anyway.  Doe's have about a 3 week recovery period and often times forget their old habits.

Good luck with your little bunny and I hope she gets over her naughty habit.
