Why after the buck does the doe he sniffs and licks her under the tail.

Dear Tom,

This is part of normal mating behavior, but no one can say exactly *why* the male does this.  The behavior is apparently not evolutionarily harmful, and so has been maintained.  It may be a form of bonding the male does with the female.  Or it may be what biologists call an "epiphenomenon":  something that happens that doesn't have a specific reason.
