Question
HI! We had a surprise litter and so far all have survived outside with the mother and father (there had been a previous litter that we found dead and the male was then identified and sorted but obviously had enough time for one more go!) and so really need some advice now! It's Scotland and the weather is cold but they seem very happy and healthy where they are. However, they will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and obviously starting to move around in the nest a lot more. Once they are out and about will I need to check and make sure they're all back in the nest together or will they find their own way there? When I checked on them yesterday one had ended up cosied in a corner to itself so I put it back with the others for warmth. Is it wise to 'interfere' like that? So far I have stopped the boys from getting too hands on - at what age can they start to pick them up and give them a proper cuddle? When they are actually venturing into the feeding hutch themselves? Both parents are quite protective of them where they are so I don't want to cause any undue stress to parents or kits.
Any advice will be welcome - thank you!
Mel

Answer
hi mel -firstly the buck should not be with them -its a wonder they are still ok. the doe must be on her own with them for at least 6 weeks.
start handling them now but if you find one out the nest at night you will have to put it back .
no doe's put the babys back in the nest they just leave them where they are.this is a common problem,
at this age dont pick them up for long maybe once a day and then wait until they are really moving about then the doe wont mind.
