Question
Hello,
I trust this find you in good health.
I've a few short questions. We have a momma house rabbit, lionhead mixed with a dwarf. She has had a litter that is now 4 weeks old. She also has a (now infertile) partner and they seem to love each other deeply. She seems a very angry little rabbit, always digging in her litter tray and pants very very fast when petted. I know that dwarfs are supposed to be bad tempered, but im worried that she will never settle down. Do you think she will be better after the op?
Also i'm in the process of finding wonderful homes for the babies, one friend want just the one and will keep it outside. I'm really concerned that it will get lonely. I have three babies, and wanted to make sure that if any were living outside they would be a couple and the one left would be a house rabbit.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts,
Mark

Answer
Hello,

I am not an advocate of spaying and neutering.  Rabbits do not do well through any surgery.  That decision is up to you.  Yes, dwarfs are generally ill tempered, and I don't think that will change much with anything, but I have never had one spayed so I can't say for sure.  Sometimes they settle down after a litter is weaned, but not always.

As for the babies - rabbits are basically solitary animals.  They rarely enjoy the company of other rabbits when they are of breeding age.  All 28 of my bunnies are outside and in their own cages.  They all seem "well adjusted and content".  As long as they are cared for and have human contact on a regular basis, a single rabbit outside should be very happy.  I wouldn't wean them until they are about 6 weeks old.

Hope this helps - Brenda
