How can I get them to pee.

Question
I like to have a bunny on my lap while watching TV but they don't seem to be able to hold their water for a long time.  Often I get pissed on before the show is over. Is there a way to get them to pee before the show starts?

Answer
Hi Tom,

I am giving you the benefit of the doubt that this is a genuine question.

Short answer is no, you can't get them to go on command or at a certain time.

Are your rabbits spayed/neutered?  I would suspect that they are not.  This kind of marking is a largely hormonally-driven thing (not a bathroom thing, but a marking thing), and the only real way to greatly reduce (if not eliminate) this is to have them fixed by a good rabbit vet (not all vets are good rabbit vets) - a vet with an extremely high success percentage (they should be over 99%) on surgeries with rabbits, having a long period of experience (years) of treating and performing surgeries.

If you need to find a good rabbit vet, start here:

www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

to find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet.  They also have other links to lists of known good rabbit vets in Europe and the UK.

Now, if your rabbits ARE already fixed, they really are going to the bathroom.  This is not uncommon if they are the kind of rabbit that enjoys being held or resting on a person.  I know of several people who are able to rest with their rabbits, and both the person and bunny will fall asleep together, and the rabbit, over the course of an hour or two, will go to the bathroom.  The rabbit is just so comfortable where they are, next to their friend, that they don't want to move and they just go where they are.  Sometimes if the person is very aware of their rabbit's behavior, they may pick up on a cue from the rabbit that they need to get them back to their litterbox. One person I know can sense a little restlessness by their rabbit and knows they need a bathroom break.
