What is the best pet rabbit?

Question
Hello!

My son is 2 years old, very smart, very responsible and we wanted to get him 2 dwarf dutch rabbits. I wanted to ask someone who is knowledgeable of rabbits to find out which would be the best.

I want something that will stay small, and that can be liter trained. The pet store is building me a rabbit hutch, so maybe some good advice on what the best type of flooring for that would be.

Thank you!

Answer
Hello Christine !
well 2 yrs is young for the responsibility of a pet rabbit. I would recommend you only get 1  rabbit right now and get a doe they are much cleanner. Also the term dwarf dutch is incorrect  pet stores seem to use dwarf in front of all their rabbits. this is to say they will be small.  the Dutch breed is not a dwarf. a dutch will get about 4.5-6.5 lbs a true dwarf rabbit is called a netherland Dwarf and will only get 2.5-3 lbs. some people cross them but they seem to still get big.
I Polish Breed will get 3.5-4 max. and they are very gentle rabbits they are not high strung like the dwarfs. this may be a good choice. also a Holland Lop may be very gentle.
As far as the flooring  it would be best to have welded wire 1"x1/2" this will help keep the cage clean you will need a tray to catch the droppings. Please stay away from Galvinazed wire 1/2" x 1/2" this type of wire is really cheap and very sharp and will cut the rabbits feet. always keep plenty of clean water and don`t feed too many greens mostly dry greens and carrots are Ok.
good luck
