Question
We can't find our rabbit. He is about 8/9 months old. We let him out of his cage to roam our back yard during the daytime and always bring him in at night to a pen in our insulated garage. We live in Tahoe and it is below freezing now. I am worried that somehow he escaped the yard and was wondering if rabbits come back, once lost? and how can we try to find him? Is there any hope?

Answer
Hi Kelary,

this is the reason you don't let them run around free.  I am sorry to hear about your rabbit.

I would keep looking, and when you go out looking, bring food along so that you can coax him to you so you can pick him up.  If you go out in pairs, have the other person cary his carrier so you can put him in the carrier.

Rabbits handle cold much better than heat.  If another animal didn't get him, he will probably be in the general area, as he does not know the territory and will stay relatively close to your house/yard for the near future.

Don't give up on him, keep looking.  He will probably stay in the general area.  Ask neighbors if they have seen him.  But try to get him as soon as you can.  They don't understand the dangers of cars or other predator animals.

I would also have him looked over and taken to the vet.
