Death of Companion

Question
Hi Amy,
One of my house rabbits, Betsy, unfortunately died very suddenly earlier on the week. I am so upset as she was only 14 months old and the vets couldn't really determine a specific cause of death.
I am now concerned about her companion Stewie who is a dwarf lop of a similar age - do you know of any signs I should be looking out for that would suggest he is distressed about the loss of Betsy? He seems OK, but Betsy hid her illness from me until she was literally dying so I'm concerned he is in distress without me knowing.
The thought of getting a new rabbit is making me feel quite sad at this point in time but I just want to do what is best for Stewie and I would hate for him to be feeling lonely.
Do you have any advice on this subject please?

Many Thanks

Answer
I am really sorry for your loss, it is always hard to loose a friend.
As for your other bun, the best advice I can give you is to read up on different rabbit illnesses and then just pay extra attention to your little guys behavior.

I do suspect he will be a little bit depressed as rabbits do feel the loss of their companions and you will need to pay extra attention to him for a couple of weeks to help him feel better.  I would wait a while before adding another bun to the family though.  This is hard to say, but Betsy may have had something contagious (although I would suspect you would know that by now) but you need to make sure that  Stewie is healthy and not depressed before you bring in a new friend.

I am linking a couple of websites that will help you learn more about rabbit illness's and can help you determine if Stewie is just upset or sick.

Good Luck, and again I am sorry
