Question
Is it safe to use "Sterets Unisept" in rabbit for wabbing burns and wounds. The active ingredient of "Unisept" is
Chlorhexidine Gluconate Solution 20% w/v BP 0.05% w/v. I want to keep some sterile aqueous solution for first aid purpose.

Thank you very much.

Answer
Dear Sarnen,

Chlorhexidene is a good disinfectant, and safe for rabbits.  It's wise to rinse off excess flush, though, so bun doesn't ingest an inordinate amount.  Chlorhexidene (ingested) is a known carcinogen, though there are worse ones out there.

Another excellent flush/disinfectant is good ol' povidone iodine (Betadine) diluted about one part to four in clean, lukewarm water.  It doesn't have the carcinogenicity of chlorhexidene.

Hope that helps.
