QuestionHi. I went to my vets yesterday with my rabbit for her regular teeth check up. Her molar teeth are mis-aligned and grow very quickly. Over the past 18 months she has had to have them burred down under GA with increasing frequency. It has now reached the stage where it must be every 3-4 weeks that this has to be done. I am concerned at the long term effects of GA and of her suffering in the period building upto her dental. Also she only has the one eye and this is affected by the teeth problem. My vet has brought up the subject of euthanasia again. Please can you provide any info on long term effects of GA and what would be in the best interests of my bunny, I would really appreciate this. Thanks
AnswerDear Vicky,
If this were my rabbit, I would not consider the E word at this point, as long as the molar filings are giving her comfort and relief. The GA isn't great, but if it must be done, it must be done. Pain meds will help in the in-between times, too.
I have actually learned to file my bunny's molars without anesthesia, but few people are willing to do that. But you could ask the vet if she has ever done that with light sedative.
And--though this is not something that is nice to have to write--there are worse ways to go than under anesthesia. If the GA does take its toll and your sweet girl simply does not wake up from a molar filing one day, then at least the passing would be peaceful and without pain.
It's just a thought.
I think as long as she's happy and has a good quality of life, she deserves all the love and time you can give her. The rest is up to you.
Hope that helps.
Dana
