Question
The wound is open though.  Its not bleeding but is open.  Husband thinks that what we are seeing in wound is the muscle... that the whole skin layer was peeled off there and we are looking at muscle, although the muscle (if that is what it is) has not been injured in any way.  When he was looking at it he said he could lift the skin on either side of wound up, therefore putting space between the skin with fur on it and whatever the red matter is that we see in the wound.  Will it still heal on its own with just cleaning?

Answer
Dear Sandra,

I know you said you can't get her to a vet.  But I really can't judge whether the wound is small enough or clean enough to be tacked partly shut with a tiny bit of super glue.  Super glue is very similar, chemically, to surgical glue.  We have used it in emergency cases when no vets are available, and a wound absolutely must be closed, at least temporarily, 'til the vet can have a look.

We use gel-style super glue, and tip the tiniest bit on the *edge* of the skin of the open wound, being very careful never to get any on the underlying tissue.  The edges of the wound can then be gently tacked together.  We don't close it all the way, as this could trap dangerous bacteria.

And we don't do this if the wound is small, since a small wound will granulate in from below, as long as it is kept disinfected and dry as possible.  So this glue tacking is only for true emergencies, when you can't get to a vet and to leave a wound open would be life-threatening.

I hope this helps.
