Filing rabbit teeth

Question
Hi Pam!  I have an 8 yr old mini lop. She's an older lady with her share of health challenges. I take her every 4 weeks to the vet to have her teeth checked. She is very quick to stop eating when her teeth bother so I have learned what actions to take when she seems to be in distress. I am taking her tomorrow to see the Vet and plan on asking if they will show me how to file Sweetpea's teeth myself. I have observed the Vet do this and think I have an idea what to do. I just need to know what tool do I need to hold Sweetpea's mouth open and where can I get it? I may need to start taking Sweetpea to get her teeth checked every 2 weeks now rather than 4 weeks. I have no problem in doing this.. but the vet visits seem to stress my little lady out. Sweetpea suffered a stroke or some kind of illness about a year ago that left her with a permanent head tilt and the loss of sight in her left eye. This is why she gets so stressed.

Answer
Hi Deb,

I personally would never recommend someone file their teeth without the assistance of a vet.  You have already gone to the vet but if you haven't already talked to them I would suggest you ask their opinion.  It is very difficult to file down the back teeth without assistance.  They may be able to show you how to file the front teeth but more often than not if their is an issue with the front teeth then their is an issue with the back molars that it is impossible to see.

Good luck with you bunny.

Pam
