Introducing male rabbits

Question
I have a 3year old neutered male rabbit who lives free range, hutched by night. 2 days ago I adopted a second 13 week old bunny from a friend who's dog kept attacking her hutch. She said the rabbit was female but it most definately isn't! We tried introducing them on neutral gound but they fought. The little one was quite aggressive! I have booked him in to be neutered in 4 weeks time. My questions are  1:how can I get them to live peaceably and happily together free range? 2: Should I keep the new one totally separate until neutered? At present he has a hutch and run in Bumps'(first bunny!)  garden. We were introducing them in the front garden. 3: Should I let Beau (new boy!) out in Bumps' garden while Bumps is shut away or will this cause problems? Ireally hope you can help as I think Beau has had a traumatic time at my friend's house and I want to give him a safe home and my lovely sweet Bumps a companion! Thankyou

Answer
Dear Liz,

Ohhhhh, good luck with this one.  First, don't even try to bond them until the little one is neutered.  It will be counterproductive, since any fighting will interfere with future friendship.
Second, don't get your hopes too high about success bonding two males who have not grown up together.  It is *really* hard in most cases, and sometimes just impossible.

The best I can offer you are the excellent articles on bonding you can find here:

Some of these tips might help.  But if a bond isn't meant to be, I never force it.  It's just too much grief and stress for the bunnies.

I hope the neuter will help, and that the articles above will make a miracle happen.  I'm rooting for you!
