My Juliana pig?

Question
I have a piggy that was born on 5/13/2010. He has been my pet for 3
weeks. I had a few questions...for the last few days his poop has not
been clustering, it's just comeing out in little balls. I have not changed his
diet any. Do you know what it could be? Also I was wondering about his
size. He's almost 13 inches long and his girth is just alittle over 12 inches
so I think he's 5 lbs. Is that normal weight for a pig his age? Thanks

Answer
Healthy piglets should gain about 1 lb per week. A five month old pig should weigh 15 - 20 lb. Your piglet might be a little too young for the weight-by-measurement formula to be accurate, so I suggest actually weighing him.

Step on a scale, check the weight. Pick up the pig, step on the scale again, check the weight again. Subtract the first number from the second to get an accurate weight for your piglet.

Or, if you have a carrier, weigh the empty carrier. Put the piglet in, weigh it again, and subtract the first weight from the second.

Normal pig poop is in little balls. Pig people often call them "pig berries". Sometimes they clump together, other times they plop out singly. Either way, fresh pig berries should be slightly moist.

If the berries come out hard and dry, or the piglet is straining to go potty, he might be dehydrated. Give piglet more fresh veggies, like lettuce and celery, and put a little bit of fruit juice in his water to encourage him to drink more.

Feeding pigs can be tricky, the rule of thumb for piglets is 1/2 cup of food minimum for pigs under 15 lb. For larger piglets, it's 1/2 cup per 15 lb of piglet (a 30 lb piglet would get a full cup). Supplement this with fresh veggies.
