Asprin and Pot-bellied Pigs

Question
I have a pot-belly that is 17 years old.  She is showing signs of pain when she walks especially if it is cold. Guess it's that arthritis the Vet warned me aboun in older pigs. (She weighs about 80 lbs) I live in Florida and when it gets chilly she always sleeps on the couch @ night.  I have been giving her an asprin every other day and it seems to help. What do you think?  Is this OK?

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and can not make a medical diagnosis over the internet.

Arthritis is very common in pot-bellied pigs. Being overweight makes the problem worse, so if piggy is on the plump side, she might feel better if she looses a little weight.

Going up and down stairs and climbing on and off furniture are hard on piggy feet and joints. If possible, use ramps instead of stairs, and use "doggie stairs" or ramps for piggy to climb up and down off furniture.

Aspirin will relieve some of the pain and inflammation. But, it's not the best thing to use for long term. Aspirin can cause ulcers and interfere with blood clotting. Rimadyl is usually the preferred drug for long term arthritis treatment. Your vet can prescribe this for your pig.
