old rat with paralyis?

Question
Hi, My daughter has a male rat about 2 years old. He has been losing weight and has extremely dry and flaky skin. He has also been losing fur. He is dragging around his back legs now, as he doesn't seem to be able to use them. He still eats well and has firm stools. I'm not sure if this is normal for old rats, is it like arthritis? Is there anything we can do for him? Thank you, Lori

Answer
Normal aging varies depending on the breeding behind a particular rat. He may have a spinal tumor hindering his movement that could feasibly be removed and restore his movement. Otherwise, provided you're continuing to care for him, he could live out the rest of his life comfortably. If he's still eating well and has no problem getting around (other than dragging his back feetsies!) I'd say keep doing what you're doing, just be sure to pad your cage bottom and shelves well enough to prevent him from getting sores and ouchies.
