Rat Accident

Question
This morning, my sister was playing with our rat, Heather, when my sister's leg landed on Heather--hard. She started to squirm around and it looked like she was having a seizure. My dad picked her up, and has been petting her ever since. He hasn't put her down once. It looks like she's having trouble breathing--it sounds like she's wheezing. She can lift herself on one paw and lick the other one, so that's a good sign--she's strong enough to do that. But she's getting weaker by the second, and we have no idea what to do but comfort her. Oh, yeah, and if this helps, my sister heard something crush in her body.

Answer
Rats can very easily be injured from even a short fall; it is very likely that she has hurt herself badly.  The only way she's going to get better is if you take her to the vet for some x-rays.  They will be able to tell what is wrong and if it can be fixed.  If it isn't something that can be treated at least she can be humanely euthanized so she doesn't have to suffer.  I'm very sorry to hear about your rat and I hope everything turns out all right!
