Question
I was recently caring for a rat over the weekend. He's a hairless that isn't any older than 6 months. We noticed he looked skinny, so separated him from the others, thinking they were bullying him and not allowing him to eat. The next day, he looked skinnier. You can clearly see his backbone, ribs, hip bones, and even the bones at the base of his tail. His skin is incredibly dry and flaky, and he has labored breathing. It sounds like he's struggling with possibly some fluid in his nose or lungs. Its also making him sneeze and wheeze. He does eat, but does so extremely slowly. This makes me think there is something wrong with his mouth, that maybe hurts when he eats, but I noticed he eats the really crunchy foods. I fed him baby food yesterday(the little meat sticks from Gerbers, as well as banana puree.) Again, he ate these foods, but very slowly and wouldn't hold the meat stick (he nibbled as I held it in front of him.) It took him over 10 minutes to not even fully eat 1/8 teaspoon of banana puree. He has been to the vet, but they can't find anything wrong with him. They only say that he's extremely underweight, then gave us Baytril and Vibramycin to give to the rat twice a day. When he went to the vet on Friday, they weighed him at 90 grams. Saturday evening, I weighed him at 87 grams. It would seem like he has a respiratory infection, but they said he doesn't have one. I also changed his bedding to dust free eco-bedding, hoping it will help him slightly. He also has really large ears, eyes, and back feet, making him look very awkward. Could it possibly be a disease from inbreeding? I absolutely love rats, especially hairless, so this little guy is breaking my heart. Any idea what's wrong with him and if there is anything I can do to help him?

Hopefully, he will be returning to the vet on Monday

Answer
He needs a better vet, this I know.

Also, please check out my website, Sandyscrittercity.com to go over proper diet and to compare respiratory disease and even heart disease to his symptoms.  Note if he uses his front paws for grasping other things.  Is he off balance?

Where are you located?  I can find you a vet that has a few more brain cells than the one the rat has seen in the past.
