Chicks dead in eggs

Question
Our African grey hen laid three eggs five weeks ago we are hand rearing one who is doing well, however both the other chicks died in the eggs. I examined the eggs by breaking them open, both chicks appeared to be fully formed. The previous clutch she laid two of the eggs were infertile and the third appeared to have died during piping. The hen has laid another egg today; we are not sure if we should remove the eggs and incubate or leave with the hen. She seems to incubate well but has trouble in the final stages. The pair are in our conservatory as we gave up on them laying a couple of years ago and moved them into the house. They were bought as a proven pair which were semi tame ex pets. Should we remove the eggs or how often should we check them, if left in the nest box.

Answer
Hi Terry,

I don't know why the chicks seem fully formed, but are not hatching. You could try taking the eggs into your avian vet to have them examined to see if the vet can tell you anything.

I do not recommend incubating eggs unless absolutely necessary. It is important for chicks to be cared for by their natural bird parents for at least the first week or two of life (when the chicks are most fragile).

I hope this helps.
