Parakeet biting

Question
Dear Maggie,
My parakeet has a nasty biting habit. We've had him since September 2005. He started biting a few weeks after we got him. He started to bite when you went near him and the bite wasn't hard. But then over time he was always ready to bite whenever you came within 1 foot over him. He bit harder and harder. Now my family and i don't really try to get in his way. Then in February 2006 we got a second bird. She's a girl. When we put them together Our boy bird that had the biting habit went right after her. And that bird is the sweetest bird you'll ever meet. Now they hardly fight. Please tell me on how to make our bird to stop biting?

Answer
Here are some articles (and links to books) that will help with the biting and aggression you are experiencing with your small parrot. Since your bird was not aggressive initially, try to think back to what might have changed in your schedule/behavior or his enviroment that would have stressed him out or triggered his aggressive behavior.

I hope this all helps you learn about your parakeet's behavior and for the two of you to bond more closely.
