Question
My blue-fronted amazon has behaved strange for a couple of days. He seemes tired and he is not as active as usually and yesterday some brown "stuff" came out of his "mouth". He has been mating with our other amazon (not blue-fronted, yellow-naped?) for about a month now and yesterday that was about the only thing he did. He usually screemes quite a lot, especially at my son but now he seemes to tired to even do that?? Is he sick or does it have something to do with the mating and having "babies"?

Answer
Hi, Annette,

I think your bird needs to be seen by a certified avian vet ASAP.  Brown stuff from the mouth is not a good sign.  However, it depends on what this brown "stuff" is.  What was your bird doing when this brown stuff came out of its mouth?  Some birds will regurgitate to their human if they are bonded to their humans.  If the BFA was feeding the other amazon beak-to-beak, this could be what the brown stuff was.  However, your statements that the bird isn't acting normally concerns me and is why I think the bird needs to be seen by a bird vet.  If the bird spent the entire day mating with the other bird, perhaps the bird is just exhausted.  However, you know your bird better than anyone else does.  If you are concerned, take the bird to the bird vet ASAP.

As an aside, you should not allow these 2 birds to mate/breed.  A blue front and yellow nape are 2 different subspecies of amazon, and you should not allow them to produce offspring.  Doing so will contaminate the gene pool of both subspecies.  In addition, babies may not be able to be produced by the 2 different subspecies, so why put them through the stress.
