care of a military macaw

Question
We just recently, because of a bad situation with the treatment of about 40 birds, acquired two military macaws.  My question is I have read a little bit where it says letting them out of their cage.  How do we do this?  AS far as are they restrained in any way or just loose?  Hope this is not a dumb question?  We have no idea we have never had any before, but we have really become attached to the birds.  We don't know if they have ever talked or if we can still teach them to talk?  Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Answer
First things first, there is no such thing as a dumb question.  At least as far as I am concerned.  We all have to start someplace, and your question is very valid.
Are you able to handle these birds?  If so, that is great and half of the battle is won on your side.  To let them out, just open the cage door for them, they should climb out on their own.  Many people let their birds roam around the house freely, with some precautions, of course.  Macaws are social birds, however, they can get very mean, so if you have small children or animals, or the birds do not like people, you may want to limit them to one room.
As far as them talking, if you talk to them (start with simple words like "hello" or "hi), they should pick up on talking.  It may take some time for them to do tjis, especially if they were not talkers to start with, but repitition is the best.  Remember to reward them when they say a new word, alot of times some words of praise will do the trick, but a treat now and then wouldn't hurt either.
I hope this helped you and please feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Good luck and God Bless
