I just got a budgie on saturday. hes doing ok, mostly just sitting on a perch, and he wasnt made any noise, but at least he's eating. i got him at petco.
here is the problem. at the pet store, there was one bird that had a wierd looking head, i'll try to describe it.
the head look fine, except for the feathers, he has a full head of feathers, but there are a lotof short little rods along with them. hope you know what im talking about?
well, my parakeet is beginning to get them. im wondering if its a bad thing. im really scared, because i love my bird and dont want him to be sick, but if he is, i want to know soon so that i can get a new one from the pet store.
    Canyou help me?

Answer -
Don't worry! It's perfectly natural and happens to all birds. It's called moulting and its how a bird grows new feathers. Little pin feathers develop first, these are the short rods that you see, eventually the case crumbles away and a brand new feather emerges. It happens a few times every year. Though maybe you could get another budgie as they are social birds and enjoy the company of other birds, they can get bored pretty easily and another bird is company for when you aren't around. Good luck!

Answer
You are welcome! It's important to mist your budgie with a spray bottle during moulting as this helps the new feathers to get through, if you do it 2-3 times per week. Just be very careful to make sure the budgie is in a warm room as they can get cold and get very sick if they aren't. take care
