Senegal Gone Wild.

Question
I was wondering if you had any idea as to why my Senegal parrot has gone on a rampage. He is a 7 year old Senegal who I have had since he was 2 months old. He loved to cuddle and just be near me but starting last week everytime I pick him up he bites me or if I am even near him on nuetral territory (not his cage) he growls non-stop and charges for me with his beak open ready to attack. Nothing has changed in his diet or his sleep but his pupils are constantly dialated near me and he can't stand to be on me so he bites me until I can smack him off. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
Aha! The last sentence sort of says it. Though he may have bitten out of a a foul mood or who knows what to begin with, once you "smacked him off" you established a threat memory in him.  No matter how nice you are, this is the thing that his instincts keep foremost in his memory.
Why? Because in nature, a bird rarely gets a second chance to survive a threat.  They need to learn what a threat is after just one encounter.

The good news is that since you've got such a good history with him, it can turn around again.  You need to be patient though ok?
