Possible problem with a blue and gold.

Question
Our blue and gold macaw is a little over a year old. He has recently stopped flying around, talking and just sits on a swing of his and sleeps all the time. This is really unlike him because he is usually extremely vocal and quite active. A few weeks ago one of our dogs knocked something over on him but he appeared uninjured. He get somewhat aggressive when we try to touch his wings which is unlike him. Recently we got a new dog as well though so I'm mostly wondering if this is signs that he is depressed or if he could have been injured and it just recently started bothering him. We do not have a local vet who treats birds and it would be quite a drive to take him to the nearest one which would be fine but I don't want to put him through the car ride unless it's completely needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I understand that you dont want to stress out your bird without good reason. I do have to say that if this was my bird, I would take him to the vet to get him checked out. Your birds behaviour is abnormal and could be indicating pain or illness. Birds hide pain very well because they are prey animals so any sign must be taken very seriously. If he is injured, he needs to be kept somewhere warm and quiet until her recovers and the dogs should be kept away from him. If your vet finds nothing wrong it could be the new dog that has upset him but either way I think that you need to get him checked out. I hope its nothing serious, good luck
