hybrid baby mice

Question
Alright here's my problem: A wild mouse got to my Elu,(through the bars of her cage), and I'm sure she's pregnant now, and close to the due date. I have no idea what to do with her half-wild pups. Should I allow friends to take them as pets, even if I inform them of their breed? Or would I have to give them up as feeders? I cannot keep them myself.

I'm also worried about her age, she is a year and a half- could that make it difficult for her?

Answer
Dear Christy,

Her age shouldn't be a problem as long as she seems healthy. Half wild babies will be difficult but not impossible to tame. They certainly won't be prepared to survive in the wild. Your friends should have no problem if they are happy with the temperament.

You can also try to find a rodent rescue which might take them.  Try this link to see if there is one near you.

There is also a guy who runs a deer mouse ranch and sometimes places tame deer mice.  He may be willing to help with half-breeds.

Elu should either be put in an aquarium or a cage with closer wires.  I had this problem recently too.  My cage was 3 stories and the mice loved it so I couldn't see putting them in something else, so I made a cover for the cage out of 1/4 inch galvanized steel mesh, which worked like a charm.  It wasn't easy to make just right, though.

Best of luck,

squeaks,
