Question
plastic hamster cage
plastic hamster cage
Hi Natasha

I know I must be getting really annoying with all my stupid questions so sorry to bother you again! but hopefully once I get these mice I won't need to bother you anymore, anyway I know I asked you about that tank well I was going to buy it but I thought that maybe I could find something smaller, lighter and easier to clean so we went to pets at home and I found this plastic hamster cage (obviously without all the stuff inside, this is the only picture I could find of it on Google# and it seems pretty good, the bar spacing at the top is roughly 8mm so that should be ok, it doesn't have any wire flooring because I heard that can be bad for their feet, it's nice and light and seems pretty easy to clean but my only slight issue with it is the size, I think it's roughly 24 inches long and has a shelf which is roughly 9 inches long maybe more, it is made out of plastic but it's very hard plastic so I don't think they'd be able to chew through it.

So taking into account all that information about it #and also let me tell you that I will be getting large playpen to go on my bedroom floor so I can put lots of toys in there and I will be putting them in the pen most days if not every day so the size of the cage might not be quite such an issue) so will this be ok for 2 or 3 mice?

well thanks for answering:)

Answer
Dear Verity,

That is a nice cage. It is plenty big enough. 8 mm is fine. You will have very happy mice-- especially if they have a pen. You might want to put the cage in the pen- or at least keep some food and water in the pen, and a nice place to sleep. Remember, daytime is when they do most of their sleeping!

It has been so long since I had very active mice that I was thinking they might stay in the cage if you put it in the pen. Not true! My mice have been bred to be show stock and just sit in a judge's hand. One of them barely moves when I pick her up :). In fact, when she had a slow friend too, she never even climbed up onto the upper levels of the 4 story cage. But once she got some active baby mice and her other buddy died, now she climbs. Still, I can leave the door open for hours and no one tries to leave! Anyway, active mice would be racing around like crazy in the cage I have- and I did have some more active mice in it once, because I picked up someone else's mice at a Rodent Fest.

Anyway, yes, it looks fine. Do watch to make sure they haven't found some way to chew their way out; but probably the manufacturer has made this impossible.

Enjoy the little tykes!

Squeaks n giggles,

Natasha
