Question

baby
a person found a baby mouse in their shed and scared mommy away by accident not knowing there were babies at first well she never came back for them and so he took the two in one died and the other well its with me now and been with me for a week but i am having trouble feeding him so it seems because he has not gained weight since he got here (he is 3g) his eyes are starting to open though but he does not seem to be the jumpy mouse you describe to some other peoples answers and now i am getting scared for the little guy. what can i do to help him gain weight? right now hes on soy baby milk(human) i did raise baby rats from 1 week old using the same formula and they are full grown now. i know baby mice are not that different then baby rats other then size. for a bit when he power sucked he sometimes got milk in the nose even with the littlest drop he drank could that be why he is so small now? here is some pictures also this is what he looked like when we first got him:

Answer
Dear Christy,

Thank you for the photos.  That helps a lot.  You are right that he does not look healthy. The best formula for baby mice is KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement).  I think you'd better try him on that.  He should be fed every two hours.  If he isn't very good at suckling, there isn't much you can do but keep offering it to him.  Even if he just gets a drop or two, if it is every two hours it should add up.

Baby mice are of course meant to be raised by mama mice, and human intervention can easily fail, due to no fault of your own.  I hope he flourishes on the kitten milk, but if he doesn't there's not a lot you can do. Don't blame yourself.
